Coolant Sampling Procedures
In this article we review the basic sampling procedures for coolants.
From Valve (Preferred Method)
The following is a basic sampling procedures for coolant where a pushbutton or KST-Series valve has been installed.
- Set the engine at low idle.
- Locate valve, remove dust cap, wipe clean.
- Before taking the sample, attach flush jar and extract coolant. This flushing procedure removes debris or stagnant coolant and ensures a more representative sample.
- Detach flush jar, discard coolant, retain flush jar for future uses.
- Attach sample jar and collect sample. Fill jar to or above the fill line, but below the threads of the jar.
- Seal the jar tightly once sample is taken and wipe clean.
Pushbutton Valve:
- Push to start flow of coolant. Push slowly to avoid a sudden burst of coolant.
KST-Series Valve:
- Use Sample Probe to start the flow of coolant from the valve.
Note: be sure to take proper safety precautions as coolant may be hot.
Using Sample Pump
This procedure can be used for coolant systems without fixed sampling hardware installed where radiator or pressure cap access is available.
- Ensure engine has been shut down for 1-2 hours.
- Carefully remove radiator cap (NOTE: Safety issue – do not remove cap if hot)
- Before taking the sample, attach flush jar and extract coolant. This flushing procedure removes debris or stagnant coolant and ensures a more representative sample.
- Detach flush jar, discard coolant, retain flush jar for future uses.
- Thread sample bottle and tubing onto sample pump.
- Insert plastic tubing into radiator tank.
- Pull plunger on sample pump to collect sample. Fill sample jar to or above the fill line, but below the threads of the jar.
- Seal the jar tightly, wipe clean.
Prep and Ship
- Pre-label or label sample jar immediately after filling to avoid mix-ups. Make sure jars are labelled with full sample details (i.e. unit number, component type, date, kilometers/service hours on unit/component/coolant, coolant manufacturer and product name, repairs/service during drain interval, coolant changed Y/N).
- Ship the sample to the appropriate Fluid Life location immediately. Do not stockpile samples for shipping.
